Abstract

Animal cruelty, especially toward stray cats, remains an issue that lacks serious attention in Indonesia, despite animals having fundamental rights to live and be free from suffering, as stipulated in Article 302 of the Criminal Code and Law No. 16 of 2009. This study aims to enhance empathy and public awareness of stray cats by designing the illustrated book Nine Lives. The book employs a digital illustration approach with oil painting techniques to narrate real stories of abuse and rescue of stray cats. It also incorporates interactive elements such as coloring pages, stickers, and creative bookmarks to engage the audience. The research methodology uses a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collection techniques including observation, interviews with cat rescue communities, and literature analysis. The findings indicate that illustrated media can evoke emotional reflection, enhance empathy, and encourage changes in societal attitudes toward stray cats. The Nine Lives book is designed to be distributed through social media to reach a broader audience, targeting primarily teenagers to adults aged 12–40 years. This illustrated book is expected to serve as an effective educational medium to advocate for the importance of protecting stray cats and inspire concrete actions in supporting animal welfare.
